Skimming is the term used when the finish top coat of plaster is applied to walls and ceilings that already have a base to apply it to.
It is just a thin layer of fine smooth plaster which is too thin and fragile to be applied directly to brick by itself. A base for the skim plaster to be applied to is therefore needed which can either be plasterboard, solid plaster or existing old plastered walls.
Once skim plaster is applied to a good solid base an experienced plasterer can trowel it up to produce a beautiful strong, smooth and flawless finish that can just be painted to look stunning.
This is when a new coat of skim plaster is applied over existing plastered walls to give it a nice new smooth finish. It is generally used when the base is still very solid but the top coat of plaster is looking tired and beginning to flake off.
In the majority of cases a re-skim is all that is needed to bring the room back to life.
Plastering over artex would normally also just involve re-skimming as long as the artex was solid and the pattern not too prominent.
Plasterboard is one of the bases used for the skim plaster to be applied to.
It is the most commonly used one today and if done correctly can provide a very good base for skimming which produces beautiful straight walls that are not so easily achieved with a solid plastering base.
Wet plastering means that the base is applied as wet plaster rather than dry plasterboard. It is also known as rough and skim, float and skim or solid plastering.
Plasterboarding is the usual plastering method used in new builds and extensions unless planning or building regulations call for anything different.
It is so much easier and faster to use than solid plastering and is a cheaper plastering method too.
It is also so much more versatile as you can buy different types of plasterboard that help with different problems.
For example you can get plasterboards to help with soundproofing, insulation and damp issues as well as specialist fire retardant boards that may be required for certain types of projects.
You could be in breach of building regulations if you do not fit the correct boards on certain types of projects so if in doubt ask an experienced plasterer for some advice.
Plasterboarding can also be carried out in existing buildings where the original plaster has been removed back to brick and just a re-skim is not going to be sufficient.
Plasterboard is screwed to stud wall frames and ceilings but it is fixed to brick and block walls by using what is known as the dot and dab technique.
The dot and dap technique involves placing a series of dabs of plasterboard adhesive in strategic points on the wall for the plasterboard to stick to. The adhesive is also placed all around the edges in order to create a good seal.
Once the walls and ceilings are completely covered in plasterboard, angle beads are applied and the joints are taped up. They are then skimmed with a finish coat of skim plaster.
This skim coat gives the wall a beautifully smooth seamless finish and the angle beads ensure the corners and edges are lovely and crisp. Once the plaster has dried the walls are ready to be painted
Solid plastering has many names throughout the plastering industry but it basically means that the whole wall is covered in solid plaster. There is no plasterboard underneath the skim coat.
Instead a rough coat of plaster which is known as browning in the trade is applied directly onto pre-bonded brick or block walls.
A plaster skim coat is then applied directly onto this base to give the wall it’s smooth finish. The finished look is the same but unlike plaster boarded walls there is solid plaster right back to the brick wall.
This was the only plastering technique that existed before the invention of plasterboards. Many of the older houses have this type of plaster and it is still a good effective form of plastering today.
Whilst the solid plastering technique is not used that much today it is particularly useful following damp proofing where a special damp proofing type of plaster is needed to be applied directly to the walls.
There are also some other occasions when it has to be used due to planning or building control reasons and of course personal preference by some people.
If you would like any further information regarding solid plastering or if you need some doing and would like a quote then please get in touch as we will be happy to help.
Plastered walls can get damaged by many causes but one of the biggest ones we see is when tiles are removed.
Sometimes the damage can be so bad the plaster is taken back to the original brick or the damage covers such a large area that the whole bathroom or kitchen needs re-skimming.
The bad news is that no matter how careful you are trying to get the tiles off, it is very rare for no damage to be caused at all. This is especially so on newer houses where the walls have been plasterboarded but can occur just as easily on older properties too.
The goods news is that no matter how bad the damage looks or whatever original plastering technique your house has it’s easy to fix with a plaster repair.
We will have your room looking as good as new in no time.
